1. The Union Prime Minister promises the National Unity Government will not change the federal democratization policy
The Union Prime Minister has promised that the NUG will implement federal democracy, as desired by ethnic groups, and will not change its policy. On January 2, the Union Prime Minister stated this in an interview with the DVB news agency. The Union Prime Minister claimed that the National Unity Government is mainly working on overthrowing the military council and that the NUG’s federal democratization policy will not change if the State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi returns as the ethnic groups are concerned.
“My conviction is that I have always wanted to overthrow the military council. Indeed, ethnic groups are concerned about that. They always asked when we met. If Daw Aung San Suu Kyi comes out again, will it change? It cannot be changed. If she comes out, I will make sure to explain that it is the desire of the ethnic people. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi herself will pay attention to the will of the public. What is the will of the public? The public wants to go to a federal democracy, so there is no change. We promise that,” the Union Prime Minister responded to the DVB news agency. The Union Prime Minister said that the journey to this point was made possible by the strength and support of the people in this revolution, also the National Unity Government believes that people are playing the most important role.
2. Meeting between the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration and township public administration groups
The NUG Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration held a meeting (1/2023) with township public administration groups in the Sagaing, Magway, and Bago regions on January 2 at 10:00 a.m. The meeting began with remarks from U Khu Hte Bu, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and Immigration. “The activities must be carried out in a coordinated manner, and everyone is encouraged to join together in the revolution and discuss the activities on the ground,” the Minister said.
Following clarification of the ministry’s activities by officials from the Public Administration Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration, attending members of the township Public Administration Groups explained the difficulties and needs they face on the ground, and relevant ministry officials responded to those who wanted to know about the policy. The meeting was led by Deputy Minister U Khu Hte Bu and attended by officials from the Public Administration Department, People’s Police Department, Fire Department, Immigration Department, Special Investigation Department, and members of public administration groups from the Sagaing, Magway, and Bago regions.
3. The National League for Democracy’s Central Working Committee sent the “2023 New Year Message” to the public
The National League for Democracy’s “2023 New Year Message” sent to the public was published as follows:

- The National League for Democracy, which arose from the People’s Uprising of 1988, is a party that always prioritizes the public’s will.
- From the time the party was founded until today, we have endured all the difficulties and dangers encountered in our efforts for democracy, human rights, and the establishment of a federal union, which all the ethnic people living in the country had anticipated.
- Today, the National League for Democracy is in a more difficult situation than ever before, and each respective party member is constantly carrying out their responsibilities regarding established policies and practical processes.
4. One dead and one injured after shooting between policemen and soldiers at the Launglon police station
According to local residents, on the night of January 1st, policemen and military council soldiers exchanged fire at Launglon township police station in Tanintharyi region, killing one and injuring one. “The sound of gunfire was loud because it was a quiet time. After hearing the gunshots, we heard screaming and fighting in the distance. The entire camp was noisy,” said a Launglon local. Following that, an emergency ambulance arrived, loaded the dead and injured, and drove at high speed towards Dawei. It is unknown whether the person who was shot was a policeman or a member of the military council, and the injured person’s subsequent condition is unidentified.
There are a total of around 30 military council soldiers and policemen at the Launglon police station, and members of the Pyu Saw Htee also live there. People’s resistance battles are taking place all over the country, and the Longlong township is a frequent battleground for the PDFs and the military council. According to local sources, 331 civilians were killed and 127 injured in the Tanintharyi region during the two-year period of the coup.
5. Over 16,000 people arrested and only over 3,000 released after 23 months following the military coup
According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) report on January 2, over 16,000 people were arrested and only 3,000 were released 23 months after the military coup. There has been a total of 2,688 deaths due to the military council, including more than 1,000 from Sagaing. According to AAPP data, 274 children died, accounting for 10.3 percent of all deaths in Sagaing.
