9. The plan to sell the reserve rice necessary to be within reach and cheaper than the external market
In order to stabilize rice prices, the Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF) announced on the evening of July 28 that it will cooperate with rice exporters to sell stored reserve rice to the market. It is reported that 50,000 bags containing 50 kg of 25 % Single Polished & Sortexed rice will be sold initially. However, the location and price of the sale have not been announced.
In addition, the statement included that there is rice security on a national scale, and therefore, overseas exports have been carrying out in an orderly manner according to the statistics obtained after regular inspections of rice warehouses. Therefore, consumers are reassured that they do not need to be worried and are requested not to buy and collect rice with worries and to buy it only when necessary, according to the statement.
According to Myanmar Daily Rice Prices updated by the Myanmar Rice Trader’s Association on July 28, the price of a bag of 25 % Single Polished & Sortexed Emata rice is at least 58,000 to 60,000 kyats.
Since one year after the military coup, rice prices have risen by 70 percent and are still rising according to the type of rice. Currently, as the price of refined rice, including rough rice, is rising above the world price, rice exporters are not making any profit, and the business of exporting rice is also declining. Therefore, we have to wait and see whether the price of reserve rice sold by the Myanmar Rice Federation will be lower than the external market price for the benefit of the public, and whether it can be sold to the nearest place that the public can reach.
