Myanmar Spring Revolution Morning Fresh News for 2023 June 23

1. Acting President Duwa Lashi La and Union Prime Minister Mahn Winn Khaing Thann welcomed the US sanctions against the military council

Acting President Duwa Lashi La tweeted on June 22 that he welcomed the US sanctions against the Myanmar military council as follows:

“We welcome today’s US sanctions coming on Myanmar’s junta including two financial institutions that facilitate transactions between junta & foreign markets. Int’l actors must stop junta using FX and block their revenue flows such as oil and gas sector.”

The United States Department of the Treasury released a statement on June 21 that the designations against the two largest banks under the control of the Junta’s Ministry of Defence (MoD); the Myanma Foreign Trade Bank (MFTB) and the Myanma Investment and Commercial Bank (MICB), were taken pursuant to Executive Order 14014 for being political subdivisions, agencies, or instrumentalities of the military regime.

“This move cuts off the military’s foreign exchange and their transactions with global markets. We eagerly await further actions to dismantle the military regime’s financial networks and support the ongoing revolution,” Union Prime Minister Mahn Winn Khaing Thann tweeted.

2. The Minister of Defence said that we must make plans for conquering the enemy’s territory and the implementation plans in our control areas

Defense Minister U Yee Mon said that we must make plans for conquering the enemy’s control area and the implementation plans in our control areas.

On June 22, the NUG Ministry of Defence reported an extract of the interview with the press of the Minister of Defense.

“Nay Pyi Taw is the heart of the enemy. We must make plans to conquer the enemy’s control area and implement plans in our control area. The special tasks to be done must be implemented according to the area,” said the minister.

Currently, the People’s Defense Forces are conducting operations in the Nay Pyi Taw area.

3. Union Minister Dr. Sasa attended a conference titled NO TIME LEFT in Rome, Italy via online

On June 21, at the office of the European Parliament representing the European Commission in Rome, Italy, a conference was held under the title NO TIME LEFT to stop the consolidation of the Myanmar’s military dictatorship and the rapid development of democracy, and it was reported that Union Minister Dr. Sasa attended.

The conference organized by Italia – Burmania Insieme was attended by the Minister of International Cooperation of the National Unity Government, Dr. Sasa via online, and discussed the important issues that the international community must do in order to support the spring revolution of the courageous Myanmar people until it succeeds.

U Khun Myint Htun, a member of the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) and Chairman of the Pa-O National Federal Council (PNFC), presented that the Spring Revolution was a people’s revolution and discussed the importance of the Karenni State Interim Administration and the Sagaing Forum for the establishment of a federal union. Following, he spoke about the silence of the international community regarding the attack on the ASEAN diplomatic convoy by militias under the SAC.

Italian parliamentarians, government members, trade union organizations, human rights activists, and diplomats attended the conference. In the conference, the stances, economic, political, and military exploits of China and Russia related to Myanmar affairs, and the stances and actions of ASEAN countries, were discussed.

4. The meeting of the Interim Local Administration Central Committee (ILACC) (25/2023) was held

On June 22, the meeting of the NUG’s Interim Local Administration Central Committee (ILACC) (25/2023) was held.

At the meeting, Union Minister for Labour U Nai Tun Pe @ U Nai Suwunna, a member of ILACC, gave an opening speech.

Following, attending members of the ILACC explained the status of the resolution adopted at the meeting (24/2023), the completion status of upcoming processes, and processes that needed to proceed, and the relevant officials discussed them extensively.

The meeting was attended by Union Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, and officials from ministries.

5. Female comrades from Yangon Sub-Military Region Battalion-5101 conducted collective training 

On June 22, the headquarters of the Yangon Sub-Military Region Battalion-5101 released a report that female comrades from the Yangon Sub-Military Region Battalion-5101 had conducted collective training.

“These are photographs of the collective training by the female comrades from Battalion-5101, Yangon Sub-Military Region, People’s Defense Force (PDF) Army, Ministry of Defence, National Unity Government,” it stated.

On June 1, 2023, the National Unity Government (NUG), Ministry of Defence, Yangon Sub-Military Region Headquarters officially announced the formation of the Yangon PDF Battalion-5101.

The Battalion-5101 is composed of comrades who are good at fighting and obeying orders. They are comrades who have attended not only basic military education courses and refresher courses, but also urban guerrilla special refresher courses.

6. 31 people who served as prime ministers, ministers and deputy ministers during the NLD’s term as the governing authority have been detained in prisons until today

On June 22, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) reported that 31 people who served as prime ministers, ministers and deputy ministers during the NLD’s term as the governing authority have been detained in prisons until today.

“According to the data collected by the AAPP, from February 2021 to June 22, 2023, (40) Hluttaw Representatives who served as prime ministers, ministers and deputy ministers during the NLD’s term as the governing authority, along with those who had won the election in 2020, were arrested by the junta. Among the (40), (31) have been still detained, including (27) representatives who had been sentenced to serve in prisons under specious charges,” it stated.

On June 21, Paungde Prison Special Court sentenced U Tun Tun Oo to serve a total of 6 years in prison on two charges under Section 505 A of the Penal Code. He had previously served as the Minister of Immigration and Population for Bago Region during the NLD’s government.

The junta forces arrested Tun Tun Oo in Paungde Town, Bago Region on May 30.

7. Justice For Myanmar called on the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) to immediately cancel Myanmar junta and Russia led counter terrorism military exercises to be held in the coming months 

Justice For Myanmar called on the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) to immediately cancel Myanmar junta and Russia led counter terrorism military exercises to be held in the coming months.

Justice For Myanmar spokesperson Yadanar Maung said: “If the world needs anymore evidence that the Five Point Consensus has failed, ASEAN’s training of junta troops in “counter terrorism” should be the nail in the coffin.”

The drills are being organised by the ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Group on Counter Terrorism, co-chaired by the Myanmar military junta and the Russian regime, and will involve a tabletop exercise in Myanmar in August and a field training exercise in Russia in September.

The working group held its final planning conference for the exercises in June in Khabarovsk, Russia, attended by all members of ASEAN and dialogue partners China and India.

The USA, Australia, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand boycotted the meeting.

8. Shwebo District Battalion-15 attacked about 70 junta soldiers who had left Wetlet Township with landmines 3 times

Eagle Guerrilla Force said that at 8:30 a.m. on June 22, Shwebo District Battalion-15 exploded landmines 3 times on a 70-strong military council column that came out of Wetlet.

“The Shwebo District Battalion-15 Bo Kouk Yoe team (Eagle Guerrilla Force) attacked 3 times with landmines on about 70 junta soldiers who came out of Wetlet. Between Thahpankone Village and Tagaungmin Village, near the Wet Thoe Kyaung (what locals called) and Hpokekone, we detonated ready-prepared mines, and four of the junta soldiers were blown away,” it stated.

They said that the comrades had to retreat because the junta soldiers fired back with small arms, but there were no injuries.

9. About 10 members of the military council were killed in the 2-day battle in Palaw

On June 22, the News and Information Department of Sub-Military Region 3 reported that about 10 members of the military council were killed in the 2-day battle in Palaw.

It is reported that an encounter took place between the People’s Defense Joint Forces and military council troops, which invaded the village of Pawutkone in 3 columns in Palaw Township, Tanintharyi Division.

The encounter started on June 20, around 11:40 a.m., on the Myeik-Dawei Union Highway between the Myeik District Battalion-1 of the People’s Defense Force Army and its revolutionary alliance, and the enemy junta troops of about 200 strong. Several skirmishes reportedly broke out until June 21, 2023, about 7:00 p.m.

During the 2-day battle, about 10 terrorist junta soldiers were killed and 1 body of the enemy was discovered by the joint People’s Defense Forces. A comrade from Myeik District Battalion-1 of People’s Defense Force Army bravely fell.

As the fighting between the People’s Defense Force Army and the revolutionary alliance forces, and the military junta in Palaw Township may become more intense, the Myeik District Battalion-1 has requested travelers not to use the Myeik-Palaw Road unless it is necessary.
