Despite rising needs of humanitarian assistance, it is with sadness to note that even the UN Humanitarian Response Plan for 2023 is funded less than 10 percent. I thank the UK for the announcement of providing USD 2.5 million humanitarian assistance to respond the impact of Cyclone Mocha. I urge the UN members states and donors to give more attention to the situation and scale up much-needed life-saving assistance through all available channels that can reach those in need.
It has caused the deaths of over 450 people including many Rohingya and need of humanitarian assistance of about 6 million people. Destruction of homes, public infrastructures, roads, bridges, crops, paddy fields is compounding the extreme suffering of the people of Myanmar.
The people affected by Cyclone Mocha are facing various severe difficulties ranging from lack of shelter, food and medicine to interruption of communication networks and transportation.”
