The National League for Democracy will not recognize the elections to be organized by the military council

The National League for Democracy (NLD) announced that it will not recognize the elections to be organized by the military council

On 9 July, the National League for Democracy (NLD) Central Working Committee issued the Statement (7/2022).

According to the statement, the general elections were held on 8 November 2020 in 1,117 constituencies out of 1,117 constituencies.

Of an estimated 38 million people eligible to vote, over 27 million people turned out to vote for Pyithu Hluttaw, over 27.5 million for Amyotha Hluttaw, and over 30 million for the Region and State Hluttaws, and therefore, it was found that 71 percent of people eligible to vote turned out to vote. The National League for Democracy (NLD) won 82.36 percent of the constituency and 920 members of parliament are elected.

The statement also states that the people of Myanmar had bravely vented their will amid the COVID-19 pandemic. International diplomats and election observers also recognized the election as free and fair. The Union Election Commission (UEC), which was formally formed and has final decision-making power over the election, had officially announced the results of the 2020 general election, and therefore, only the results of the 2020 election are still valid in accordance with the will of the people, and the National League for Democracy (NLD) fully embraces the people’s transfer of power. However, it is learned that the military council is planning to hold another election to deceive the people and the international community at a time when the revolutions against the military council have erupted across the country and the situation in the country is deteriorating as a result of an unjust coup by the military regime, ignoring the will of the people and rejecting the election results.

Not only the coup d’etat of the military regime is inconsistent with the Constitution, which they enacted, but also all rules, regulations, and procedures (including elections) they carry out are not in accordance with any law or procedure because it is not legal to dissolve the official Union Election Commission that only the President has the right to form and the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw had approved, and form a new one. Therefore, the National League for Democracy (NLD) will not accept it at all.
