1. NUCC and NUG call on political parties to refrain from serving as informants for terrorist junta

The NUCC and NUG issued a joint statement cautioning political parties against becoming informants for the terrorist junta. This statement came after junta leader Min Aung Hlaing’s request to representatives of political parties registered with the junta-appointed Union Election Commission (UEC) under the illegal political party registration law to report individuals opposing the military dictatorship during a recent meeting in Naypyidaw. The joint statement highlighted the military’s efforts to exploit political parties and their members as a means of bolstering military dictatorship.

Emphasising the vital role of political parties in representing people, training politicians, promoting political engagement, forming elected governments, proposing and implementing policies, raising political awareness, and fulfilling electoral responsibilities, the statement points out the junta leader’s disregard for political parties and portrayal of political parties as culprits in history who have destroyed the country’s democracy.

The statement called on political parties to uphold their political integrity, urging party leaders and members to refrain from becoming informants against the people’s will, refrain from being part of military oppression mechanisms, and refuse to be cast as historical culprits. It advised parties to revoke their registration, resign from membership, and distance themselves as marginalised party members.

In the first week of January 2024, junta leader Min Aung Hlaing held a meeting in Naypyidaw with representatives from 39 political parties that had been registered with his illegal Union Election Commission (UEC).

2. NUG extends a felicitation letter for the 76th anniversary of Karen National Day

The National Unity Government (NUG) sent a felicitation letter on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of Karen National Day, observed on February 11, 2024. In the message, the NUG expressed hopes for the realisation of the Karen State’s aspirations for equality, self-determination, and federalism that the Karen ethnic community has long sought.

Acknowledging the solidarity and efforts of the Karen people alongside the entire Myanmar populace in eradicating military dictatorship and all forms of authoritarianism, the NUG commends their contribution, emphasising the shared goal of establishing a federal democratic union that upholds national equality and self-determination, a key objective of the ongoing Spring Revolution.

3. General Gun Maw asserts that enforcement of Conscription Law signals the conclusion of the terrorist military leader and military council

KIA General Sumlut Gun Maw stated that the enforcing of the Conscription Law by the military leader signals the conclusion of both himself and his military council. He conveyed this message in response to a news post by Khit Thit Media regarding the activation of the Conscription Law.

In his comment, General Gun Maw wrote, “If February 1, 2021, marks the initiation of their conclusion, then the activation of this law on February 10, 2024, can be regarded as the conclusive phase of their conclusion.”

The Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO), along with its armed wing, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), has been actively involved in leading the public’s efforts against the military dictatorship since the onset of the Spring Revolution.

Meanwhile, the Three Brotherhood Alliance, consisting of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), and the Arakan Army (AA), which have gained control of dozens of towns in Northern Shan State, Rakhine State, and Chin State, expressed confidence in overthrowing the military dictatorship within the current year in their Chinese New Year message on the night of February 9. Subsequently, on February 10, the military junta attempted to implement the Conscription Law.

Currently, the revolutionary forces, including the Three Brotherhood Alliance, have seized control of 41 towns across the country. Faced with defeats, troop losses—fatalities, injuries, desertions, and surrenders—the military junta resorted to enforcing the People’s Military Service Law, initially introduced in November 2010.

The Kyunhla-Kanbalu Activist Group revealed that this military column had previously arrived and set up base in Chat Gyi village after advancing through Taung Pay Kone village and Shan Kone village, with Chat Gyi village predominantly controlled by the Pyu Saw Htee militia.

In Ngoke To village was the first to suffer arson attacks by the military forces in Chat Thin village tract, experiencing two incidents in April and August 2022, resulting in the destruction of 157 houses.

As reported by the Kyunhla-Kanbalu Activist Group, residents of at least 25 villages in Kanbalu Township remain displaced due to airstrikes, infantry marching by the military junta, and ongoing clashes.

Additionally, ongoing attacks on residential areas and civilian populations by the military junta in Rakhine State persisted.

On February 10, the AA said that the military junta conducted day-long coordinated attacks using aerial and naval forces on Minbya Town, which had been under complete control of the AA since February 6. Additionally, the military bases of the junta in the neighbouring Ponnagyun Township unleashed artillery shells on Minbya Town.

Similarly, on the same day, the military junta launched attacks on Yanbye (Ramree) Town and its surroundings. This included 31 instances of artillery shelling in the morning from an outpost situated on Thein Taung Pagoda Hill, 19 instances of artillery shelling from the No. 41 Attack Warship, and 5 instances of artillery shelling from a coastal land craft mechanized. Furthermore, in the afternoon, a fighter jet conducted four bombing attacks, and a Mi-17 launched an additional attack on the area. Consequently, the vicinity of Aung Dhamma temple, the historic Ko Ran Taung Zedi pagoda, and wards 5 and 6 of Yanbye Town were devastated by the bombings.
