It is reported that India-based Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, sold the Myanmar Port project to be built in Yangon at a loss of 150 million dollars. Adani Ports has announced the sale of the Myanmar Military Port Project to Solar Energy Limited for US$30 million.
“Adani Ports has ignored questions from Justice For Myanmar asking who owns Solar Energy Limited and where they are registered, a shocking breach of transparency over a major asset that belongs to the people of Myanmar and has been under the illegal control of the military conglomerate, Myanmar Economic Corporation.
The announcement suggests that Adani will finally stop developing the port, hours after we exposed them for continuing to pump funds into an asset that they know enriches the genocidal Myanmar military.
Adani Ports’ business in Myanmar and their attempts to exit have been deeply irresponsible and demonstrate the company’s serious human rights failures.
We call on Adani Ports to divest responsibly from Myanmar, disclose their human rights due diligence, full details of the buyer and mitigate and remedy harm done as a result of their business with Myanmar Economic Corporation,” Justice For Myanmar stated.
After the American government sanctioned the Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC), the Yangon port project was resold at a reduced price of 30 million dollars. Adani’s investment in Myanmar is estimated to be up to 195 million US dollars.
