2. Dr. Tun Aung Shwe questions former dictators if they now grasp Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s message on democracy

In a Facebook post on July 26, Dr. Tun Aung Shwe, the National Unity Government (NUG) representative in Australia, questioned whether former dictators currently under quasi-house arrest understand Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s statement that “Democracy is a system that will protect you too.”

He wrote, “Daw Aung San Suu Kyi once told a group of dictators, ‘Democracy is a system that will protect you too.’ Do you think the former dictators who are now living like they are under house arrest can comprehend that?”

The residences of former generals, including ex-dictator Senior-General (retired) Than Shwe, are being watched around the clock by the current junta leader Min Aung Hlaing’s security forces.

3. Karenni State IEC issues emergency evacuation warning for residents near Balu Chaung River due to Mobye Dam discharge

The Karenni State Interim Executive Council (IEC) has issued an urgent warning for residents in Loikaw and those living near the Balu Chaung River to evacuate immediately. This alert follows the reckless discharge of the Mobye Dam by the military junta’s 422nd Light Infantry Battalion (LIB-422), based in Mobye, Karenni State. The discharge on the morning of July 25 has caused the Balu Chaung River’s water level to rise by up to 8 feet within 24 hours.

The military’s actions have led to flooding in the Mobye Reservoir, Hparlai Reservoir, and the villages of Hpaya Ni, Hpaung Ka Taw, and Hpaya Phyu. The IEC suggests this was a deliberate attempt to cause hardship for local farmers and civilians. The discharge has put approximately 1,000 acres of paddy fields along both sides of the Balu Chaung River at risk of being submerged and destroyed. There is also a significant risk of flooding in residential areas of Loikaw and surrounding villages.

Local organizations have also urged internally displaced persons (IDPs) living near the Balu Chaung River to be particularly cautious, as the dam’s water, which was stored during the summer, is now being released during the monsoon season. The IEC warns that the river’s water levels may rise again within three days, urging people in low-lying areas around Loikaw and along both sides of the Balu Chaung River to remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate as soon as possible to safety if necessary.

For those in need of emergency assistance, the IEC has provided Signal phone numbers for the Emergency Relief Division and the Humanitarian and Rehabilitation Department under its Ministry of Home Affairs.

The announcement stated, “We are constructing a clinic in Karenni at a cost of over 12 million kyat. We have allocated 5 million kyat for Yangon and 10 million kyat for a school building in Anyar, and we are now continuing to build a medicine storage facility for a hospital.
