“To the best of our ability, we cooperate with UNHCR. It is difficult for us to follow up on individual cases. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent letters of appeal to the relevant countries to take care of Myanmar refugees through policy. It also has to do with the budgets of the countries that would absorb refugees, and even if the budgets are granted there, refugees must be transported with the consent of Thailand’s security council. In addition, some countries have not signed treaties on refugees, and it is difficult to persuade those countries that have not signed. Only if those countries have political will, they will find a way to bring them [refugees] from the second country. We are pushing around to make it happen.”

Furthermore, the Union Minister said that the issue of Myanmar refugees has been discussed with international governments as well as the United Nations.

As of January 30, 2023, according to the latest figures from the United Nations, there have been more than 1.5 million internal displaced people across Myanmar, of whom 1.2 million were displaced by conflict and insecurity since the February 2021 coup d’état.
