The NUG sent the letter to the ASEAN Foreign Ministerial Special Meeting to abandon the ASEAN five-point consensus, which have not made progress for 20 months
The National Unity Government sent the letter to the ASEAN Foreign Ministerial Special Meeting to abandon the ASEAN five-point consensus, which have not made progress for 20 months. Daw Zin Mar Aung, Union Minister of Foreign Affairs of the National Unity Government, sent the letter dated October 16 on behalf of the National Unity Government to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers with regard to the ASEAN Foreign Ministerial Meeting held on October 27.
The letter acknowledges the ASEAN’s unprecedented efforts in resolving the Myanmar crisis. In the past twenty months, the National Unity Government has repeatedly reiterated its commitment to work with ASEAN to return Myanmar to the path of democratic transformation. Although NUG welcomed the ASEAN’s five-point consensus and gave them the opportunity, there was no progress until twenty months passed, so it is necessary to review and abandon the ASEAN’s five-point consensus. It is said that “last April 24, although the leader of the terrorist military attended the meeting of ASEAN leaders and agreed, there was no intention to implement it, and the past 20 months have proved the indifference of the terrorist warlords towards ASEAN”.
To recognize the great trouble of the people of Myanmar, ASEAN needs serious consultation for the way forward. National Unity Government, the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), Ethnic Revolutionary Organizations (ERO), National Democratic League (NLD), representatives of People’s Civil Disobedience Movements; committees representing interstate/federal units and public representatives from civil society organizations, expressed the need to hold a panel discussion event.
